Abstract:We discuss classical and modern results devoted to investigation of geometry of the proper class consisting of all metric spaces and endowed with Gromov-Hausdorff distance.

Bio:Alexey Tuzhilin graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University and defended his doctoral dissertation in 1997. From 1989 to 1992 he worked in the Laboratory of Renewable Energy Sources of the Faculty of Geography. In 1992, he became an assistant professor at the newly created department of Differential Geometry and Applications (Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics) under the leadership of Anatoly Fomenko, and since 2000 he has been a full professor. In 2001, for a series of works on the theory of ramified extremals of one-dimensional variational problems (together with Alexander Ivanov), he was awarded the Shuvalov Prize of the first degree. He was a member of the expert council of the Higher Attestation Commission, as well as a member of the academic council at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University. Currently heads the Laboratory of Computer Methods in Natural Sciences and Humanities. He also serves on the editorial boards of several international journals.
